“Where Do We Go From Here?”
One of the things I like best about being part of the True North team is that we never stop thinking about the next step in our growth as a team, and the fact that all of our meetings are over dinner doesn’t hurt either.
In between bites over dinner a few weeks ago, Tara and myself were evaluating everything from views on the blogs, to customer outreach and and we both hit a wall when we approached the topic of “Why people don’t ask for help when they need it? Why would some owners rather let a restaurant fail, then reach out to someone for assistance. Not just to us as a consulting company, but to anyone?”
So “What do you need”? What does it take for a person to admit that they need support running their business?” Wouldn’t it be great if it was that easy, just to ask someone the question “what do you need” and all of their worries would be gone.
Unfortunately things aren’t that simple. In order to recognize what we need individually, we first have to look inward and find out what we are lacking. what we truly want, and what is preventing us from achieving it. Is it trust? Is it fear?
Any internal reflection always makes me feel uneasy, maybe it is because sometimes it is hard to see the reflection in the mirror. (on a side note I just had a Michael Jackson “Man in the Mirror” montage playing in my head).
Wait a minute… isn’t that kind of the point? Isn’t growth in general personally or in business continually looking at ourselves throughout our lives to see what changes we need to make to get to a better place? Thanks Mike.
Maybe the change you are needing isn’t monumental . Perhaps it is a simple conversation between you and your staff to see if everyone is on the same page and aligning your team back to the mission and vision of your company.
Maybe it is reworking the delivery schedule to reduce tension during service. Or just maybe it is looking at your struggling employee and instead of dismissing them, ask yourself if you have given them the foundation that is needed for them to be successful . Or better yet how about connecting with them to find out what changes you can make to foster an environment that supports employees in being the employee they believe they can be.
Asking questions of ourselves and those around us strengthens us as a team. Questioning builds our curiosity, and it reveals why something did it happened or didn’t happen.
One thing that we do at True North is ask questions. There is a question to everything. Sometimes it’s a simple straight forward answer, and sometimes the answer is complex and one that is revealed over time.
It's when we stop questioning that things start to unravel. It’s also when we stop growing. In our eyes growth is something that never ends. Every time we grow through asking questions, facing adversity, or overcoming something we never thought we could, we are introduced to a new version of ourselves.
One that is wiser with a better perspective, and though we still won’t know everything, we will know a little more than we did before.
Now you still may not have all of the answers to your questions, and that’s okay …the journey is part of the fun.
